Isabel Thomas attended the Creators’ Rights Alliance (CRA) Annual General Meeting on behalf of ABSW in November. ABSW is a member of CRA, a key voice for UK creators.

The CRA continues to engage politicians and policymakers on behalf of its members to champion creators’ rights. It has forged new relationships with the Government and attends regular meetings with the Department for Science Innovation and Technology and the Department for Culture Media and Sport. The CRA also sits on the Creative Industries Council (CIC) and subcommittees. They will attend a cross-sector CIC Meeting with Secretary of State, Lisa Nandy in Gateshead in December.

Generative AI

During 2024, the CRA worked collaboratively with members to respond with evidence to five different IPO consultations on Generative AI. In August, they issued an open letter to AI companies and investors, reaffirming that member organisations and the creators they represent do not consent to their works being used to develop generative artificial intelligence (AI).

Remuneration and working conditions

In the summer of 2024, the CRA collated a range of evidence for DCMS which included examples of bad practice in the use of Generative AI, and issues around remuneration, contracts and working conditions for creators and freelancers.

The CRA is asking for implementation of the recommendations of the DCMS-sponsored Good Work Review, using the sector’s CREATOR campaign as a basis for fair working standards. The CRA and its members are also urging the government to introduce the Smart Fund and appoint a Freelance Commissioner.

We encourage ABSW members to let us know about any issues relating to your rights as a creator that you think we should be aware of. We can provide advice, and anonymised case studies can be used to help CRA gather the evidence they need when speaking to Parliament and the Government on your behalf.
