A call for ABSW members who would like to be mentored by experienced science writers

By ABSW treasurer JV Chamary

"Why are my pitches getting rejected? How can I improve my copy? What prompts good quotes?" Those are the kind of questions an experienced mentor can answer.

Following a successful pilot phase in 2021, ABSW launched a one-on-one mentoring scheme for early-career science writers. It will accept new mentees twice a year for the foreseeable future.

Each mentor-mentee pair should meet at least 30 minutes a month. The mentoring period initially lasts 6 months but can be extended for as long as both parties believe that the mentoring relationship continues to be useful and productive.

Mentorship provides writing tips, journalistic skills and career guidance from established ABSW members. If you would like to be paired with a mentor in our second round of 2023, please visit our mentoring pages and complete the application form by 12:00 on Friday October 27, 2023 (note that the scheme is popular and places are limited, so register your interest ASAP!)

Mentoring benefits mentors too. Besides being personally rewarding, sharing your expertise can push you to reassess your work and further hone your craft. If you would like to become a mentor, visit our mentoring pages and complete the application form or contact Sallie Robins: [email protected] if you would like to discuss first.

We look forward to helping ABSW members to help each other with their careers.
