The Creators’ Rights Alliance (CRA) has launched a dedicated area on its website where creative freelancers can explore how to calculate fees and rates for their work. As a founding member of CRA, ABSW supports this campaign.
“The ABSW was a founder member of the CRA, which campaigns on behalf of creators to ensure that our intellectual property rights are protected and that other important laws are made in our favour”, says Andrew Extance, ABSW Chair. “The CRA is our main campaign activity, which benefits our members in many ways.”
CRA includes details of various options for Calculating Rates and Fees, depending on the type of work you do, how and where it will be used, or if it involves licensing the work to clients.
It has also published the Freelance Day Rate Guide, previously known as the Freelance Ready Reckoner, and is now in its eighth edition. The new Guide aims to help UK-based freelance creators calculate the equivalent daily income rates as accurately as possible. The figures are comparable to employee staff salary levels within the range of £23,000-£60,000 per year.
The 2023 Guide has been produced in partnership with the Society of Authors (SoA), for whom Katharine King has worked closely with Andrew Bibby. Bibby, a professional freelance financial journalist, produced the former Reckoner in association with the National Union of Journalists (NUJ).
