The Science Communication Unit at UWE Bristol is exploring three areas of science journalism practice with a view to enhancing their teaching provision, developing training resources and sharing good practice with working journalists. It’s part of a project involving science journalists in India looking at the themes of equality, inclusion and diversity, digital skills and environmental journalism.

The Unit is currently looking for science journalists, science writers, bloggers and those working in communication roles who would be willing to contribute to the research in the following ways:

  • 2-3 people willing to join an advisory group and commit to 3 online meetings (1.5 hours each) spread across the year. Advisors will help shape the direction of the project. There will be an honorarium of £100 for attendance at all three meetings. The first of these meetings will be held on Friday, 3rd March 14:00 – 15:30.
  • Participants for three face-to-face workshops (to be held in March and April); each workshop is expected to last around 3 hours. The workshops will cover:

a) Equality, Inclusion and Diversity issues faced by science journalists, including but not limited to online harassment and challenges of including diverse voices;

b) Digital skill needs and how these might complement more traditional journalism skills;

c) challenges and opportunities associated with communicating sustainable development goals.

There will be an honorarium of £100 for participation in each face-to-face workshop along with reasonable travel expenses and light refreshments. It is expected that the workshops will be held at UWE Bristol, and participants may choose to join one or more workshop depending on interest and expertise.

As these workshops may lead to research outputs, you will be provided with an information sheet explaining the study in more detail. If you are willing to participate, you will need to sign a consent form; you will be free to withdraw from the study following the workshop should you decide to do so.

This project is funded by the British Council.

If you are interested in participating, please complete this short questionnaire by 5pm on 2 March 2023 to indicate how you are able to help.
