The European Science Journalist of the Year Award is now open for entries for work published in 2024. The award is co-ordinated by the European Federation for Science Journalism of which the ABSW is a member.
Previously the ABSW used to run an award called 'British Science Journalist of the Year' to select our nominee for the European Award, but this proved problematic for many reasons. In 2025 the ABSW is encouraging its members to enter the Award individually and we will cover the cost of entry (10 Euros). The Award is open to individuals working in Europe, and those whose work has been published in European media. The judges are looking for informative, inspirational, innovative and impactful journalism.
Last year’s winners reported on the extent of PFAS ‘forever chemicals’ contamination in Europe, a threatened ice barrier in Antarctica, and corruption and crime in higher education. At the awards ceremony in Budapest, the 3 winners (Stéphane Horel, Tim Kalvelage and Dora Kršul) explained how they covered their stories against a changing landscape of declining public trust in science and a shrinking science journalism industry.
This Award is an opportunity for the European science journalism community to come together and celebrate the tireless efforts made by those who scrutinise and report objectively and independently on science issues that matter to the general public.
Please ensure you state that you are an ABSW member when you enter so that you will not be charged the 10 Euro entry fee.
Deadline for submissions: 1 June 2025, 23:59 CET.
